The purpose of the CPA Life Member Award is to honour living Canadian poets and non-poets for their longstanding contribution to the Canadian poetry scene and/or for their contribution to the craft of writing poetry.
An individual that is being honored must have a 75% majority approval from the Nomination Committee that will consist of the Executive Committee, all committee chairpersons including the Advisory Committee, Poemata Editor, Poemata Layout person and Chapter Chairpersons. A name will be brought forward for nomination with support names and signatures from a minimum of 5 Canadian Poetry Association members before that nomination name will be considered by the Nomination Committee. (E-mail printouts will suffice in lieu of paper based signature support.) The nomination will be presented in writing, in hard copy, on paper and will include a short bio of the nominated individual (maximum 500 words), photograph of nominee, sample of the nominee's poetry (if they are being nominated for their contribution to the craft of writing poetry) and a short essay (maximum 500 words) stating the nominee's accomplishments and reasons for nomination.
The selection process will take place once a year and will be announced, if possible in December or January for a February poetry reading/roast. Nominations with supporting signatures and/or e-mail printouts will be presented to the executive all year long but no less than two months before the AGM. The President will bring the nomination to the attention of all members of the Nomination Committee. The paper based nomination package that is presented to the Nomination Committee will be kept with other archival information. All of the nomination package, what ever portion is appropriate, will be scanned and posted as a permanent archive on the CPA website.
There will be no more than 2 CPA Life Member Awards chosen per year. The nomination Committee is not obliged to honour any individuals every year. There shall be two classifications of Life Members: the Poet and Non-poet. A Poet Nominee must have a minimum of 5 published books and have been included in a minimum of 10 anthologies to be eligible for nomination. A Non-Poet Nominee must have served the Canadian poetry scene for a minimum of 10 years. A nominee must not necessarily be a member of the Canadian Poetry Association.
The CPA Life Member Award Certificate(s) will be presented at the annual CPA AGM (annual general meeting) as well the Canadian Poetry Association will send press releases to all media and will announce the new CPA Life Member Award in the following issue of Poemata.
