The purpose of the CPA Life Member Award is to honour living Canadian poets and
non-poets for their longstanding contribution to the Canadian poetry scene and/or for
their contribution to the craft of writing poetry.

An individual that is being honored must have a 75% majority approval from the
Nomination Committee that will consist of the Executive Committee, all committee
chairpersons including the Advisory Committee, Poemata Editor, Poemata Layout person
and Chapter Chairpersons. A name will be brought forward for nomination with support
names and signatures from a minimum of 5 Canadian Poetry Association members before
that nomination name will be considered by the Nomination Committee. (E-mail printouts
will suffice in lieu of paper based signature support.) The
nomination will be presented in writing, in hard copy, on paper and will include a short
bio of the nominated individual (maximum 500 words), photograph of nominee, sample
of the nominee's poetry (if they are being nominated for their contribution to the craft
of writing poetry) and a short
essay (maximum 500 words) stating the nominee's accomplishments and reasons for
nomination.

The selection process will take place once a year and will be announced, if possible in
December or January for a February poetry reading/roast. Nominations with supporting
signatures and/or e-mail printouts will be presented to the executive all year long but no
less than two months before the AGM. The President will bring the nomination to the
attention of all members of the Nomination Committee. The paper based nomination
package that is presented to the Nomination Committee will be kept with other archival
information. All of the nomination package, what ever portion is appropriate, will be
scanned and posted as a permanent archive on the CPA website.

There will be no more than 2 CPA Life Member Awards chosen per year. The nomination
Committee is not obliged to honour any individuals every year. There shall be two
classifications of
Life Members: the Poet and Non-poet. A Poet Nominee must have a minimum of 5
published books and have been included in a minimum of 10 anthologies to be eligible for
nomination. A Non-Poet Nominee must have served the Canadian poetry scene for a
minimum of 10 years. A nominee must not necessarily be a member of the Canadian
Poetry Association.

The
CPA Life Member Award Certificate(s) will be presented at the annual CPA AGM
(annual general meeting) as well the Canadian Poetry Association will send press releases
to all media and will announce the new CPA Life Member Award in the following issue of
Poemata.
