We welcome your interest in forming a Canadian Poetry Association Chapter.
Starting a Chapter is quite straightforward. If you already know writers or poetry-lovers nearby who would like to get together on a regular basis to read and in any way promote the cause of poetry, simply announce yourselves to the National C.P.A. Headquarters as a new Chapter.
C.P.A. Chapters give members in the same geographic area a chance to get out and talk about what's going on in other parts of the country, to argue about issues relating to poetry and its promotion. It also provides your locality with a group that promotes the literary arts by sponsoring readings, supporting poets and publishers, and lobbying local issues at a national level.
Again, starting a C.P.A. Chapter is easy enough. If there is no C.P.A. Chapter in your town (A list of Chapters across Canada is available upon request), starting your own is simply a matter of calling yourself one and telling us - the National Headquarters, and other members in your town about it. We, at the National, will then use you as a contact when people or groups want to plan events in your town, or simply check out the local poetry scene.
Generally, the breakdown in duties is as follows:
The C.P.A. will:
1) Promote your Chapter's events, projects, accomplishments, etc. through the newsletter and help you keep in touch with what others across the country are doing for poetry.
Chapters are expected to:
1) Be autonomous. That is, plan and run your own programs, in whatever way you choose, to promote poetry and the CPA Aims.
2) Keep an up-to-date Chapter membership list, showing each member's name, mailing address and ALL C.P.A. Membership fees mailed directly to the national office.
3) At least once a year, before March 31st, send the National office a copy of your membership first, so we can make sure every paid-up member continues to receive the newsletter and other national mailings.
4) You should, as Chapter Chairperson, mobilize local members and organize Chapter meetings. If you are starting your own newsletter or literary magazine, make an announcement in the C.P.A. National newsletter.
5) Three times a year, supply a short report for the National newsletter of your Chapter's poetry activities.
6) If you publish any editorials or other items in your newsletter (should you start one), send them to us at the National Headquarters and we would be happy to give them a national forum in our quarterly newsletter - POEMATA.
Best wishes! We'll be waiting to hear more about your new C.P.A. Chapter. It is our hope that this information will help quash any quandary in each Chapter's struggle to take shape.
